Shoo Fly, Don’t Bother Me

Posted in Bugs & Vermin, Uncategorized

Pest flies are harder to eliminate than forget, such as the one and only house fly that everybody shoos. Well, there is garbage, there is house fly. House fly has sponging mouthparts, therefore, they don’t bite; however, they play an important role in transmitting disease to humans and animals. Houseflies serve as carriers of disease agents due to their predilection for feeding on animal wastes, garbage, and human foods. Houseflies known to carry bacteria and viruses that cause conditions such as diarrhea, cholera, food poisoning and eye infections.

In summer time, house flies can finish egg to egg life cycle in as little as 7 days. Female flies lay their eggs in various types of moist, decaying organic materials, almost any type of rotten organic stuff. Each female fly can lays up to 500 eggs in several batches of about 150 each over a three to four day period. House fly maggots feed on and develop in the material where the eggs are laid. When the maggots are full grown, they crawl to a drier area to pupate then emerge as buzzing flies.

There are many home remedies for house flies, the most ubiquitous pest of all. Such as the clover and apple method. That is, poke about 20 whole cloves into a ripe apple, place it on a plate and watch it work in your home. These fragrant pomanders (as they are called) can last for weeks. But of all methods, sanitation shall be the first measure of all defense. It is important to eliminate the breeding source to be fly free. Kitchen garbage should be brought out daily; spilled liquid food should be cleaned up quickly and completely. Food waste on which flies can find and lay eggs on should be covered or removed.

Secondly, exclusion also plays a critical role in good house fly management. Garbage cans and dumpsters should have tight-fitting lids and be cleaned regularly. Openings of buildings should be tightly screened with screen.

Glued fly traps can be a great tool for controlling house flies, along with fly swat. But sometimes, you may need an extra hand dealing with them. Pest management professionals can provide a thorough treatment to your house to help you so you don’t have to shoo the fly.
