Home Pest Guide Cockroach
Description
There are many species of cockroaches, but among the best-known pest species are the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), which is about 1.2 in long; the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), about 0.59 in long; the Asian cockroach (Blattella asahinai) also about 0.59 in; and the Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis), about 0.98 in long.
Among the previously mentioned cockroach species, the German cockroach is most frequently found in homes and apartments. Another species, the wood roach, is common in cabinets and lake homes. Cockroaches range in color from light brown to an oily black depending on the species.
Importance
Cockroaches like to hide in dark, undisturbed places close to food and water which is why they are often noticed first in kitchens and bathrooms. They infest homes and buildings that provide suitable conditions for breeding and feed mainly at night. They will scurry for shelter when the lights are turned on.
Cockroaches carry viral and bacterial pathogens on their bodies and in their feces which can cause conditions including asthma, salmonella poisoning and dysentery. These conditions are especially harmful to children.
Control Methods
Getting rid of cockroaches can be extremely difficult as these nighttime pests are naturally elusive and adapt extremely well to their surroundings. That’s why it is highly recommended for roach infestations to contact a professional pest control company. At Guardian, we offer effective cockroach control to eliminate cockroach problems.
Do-it-yourself cockroach treatments and products are not usually effective and may contain pesticides that can be harmful to people and pets if they are misused or mixed improperly.
Cockroach problems can be difficult to prevent, but reducing sources of water, keeping food tightly sealed and proper sanitation practices will deter these pests. If cockroaches have infested your property, contact Guardian Pest Solutions.
