I woke up to a thick blanket of fog this morning, much to the delight of seeing natural scenery, I am more concerned about the cooling temperatures. Another group of pests will show up quickly with approaching cold nights. These so-called Fall Invaders include Cluster Flies, Multi-colored Asian Lady Beetles, Boxelder Bugs and a few others. Normally, with the dropping temperature and changes in daylight, adults of these insects migrate towards buildings in search of warm area to wait out the cold winter. When they move indoors, they do not breed, feed or develop during the winter. They slow down their metabolism and wait for the arrival of spring. Next spring, they usually leave their hiding spots and simply go back to nature.

While these insects typically do not cause structural damage, they are generally considered a nuisance — especially when they arrive in large numbers. Or when they “wake up” on warm winter days and start showing themselves in the living quarter. Prevention is always the key when dealing with Fall Invaders, here are a few tips to remember:

1. Seal all gaps around windows and doors, including garage doors.
2. Be sure screens on windows are in good repair and do not have any openings.
3. Look for areas where pipes and electrical or cable lines enter the building. Gaps around these areas should be sealed.
4. Look for openings around soffits, eaves, attic fans, windows and vents in the attic used for ventilation. Many times these areas are not screened, allowing pests inside.
5. Vacuuming is the best way to eliminate the insects once they are inside.
6. Talk to your pest management providers about a preventative exterior treatment. This application is usually made to the areas where pests are resting and entering the building.
