House Mouse: Pest of the Month

Posted in Entomology, Pest Control, Tips & Tricks, Uncategorized

With cooler weather rapidly approaching, now is the time to keep an eye out for rodents, especially the house mouse.  A house mouse is usually a light brownish grey in color, three inches long with large ears, and tail that is as long as their body.  They will often invade a home to seek warmth and shelter, potentially causing damage to property and contaminating food.  House mice are omnivorous and will eat just about anything a human eats.  Signs of an infestation include: droppings that are approximately ¼ inch with pointed ends, gnawing or chewing marks (they will chew on just about anything), and seeing mice within the home.

Prevention is the best action a homeowner can do the prevent mice from entering a home.  Some actions a homeowner can do is seal cracks and gaps around pipe fittings and foundations to prevent mice from entering.  On the inside, seal or fill in gaps or holes around pipe fittings under sinks to eliminate potential access points.  Other prevention methods include cleaning under the stoves, refrigerators, and under cabinets, to remove any food debris.  Store human and pet food in tightly sealed containers, and store garbage in containers with lids.  If a mouse gets in the house, place snap traps and glue boards in areas were mice activity is common, such as along walls, in corners, under appliances, furniture, or shelving.  Baits such as peanut butter, chocolate, etc. can be used to bait the snap traps.  Check the traps often and use gloves to properly dispose of any mice caught.
