What are bed bugs?
Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown, roughly ¼-inch long, and flat. Found worldwide and in all 50 states, these pests primarily feed on humans, but they can also feed on warm-blooded animals, including family pets. One of the reasons bed bugs are so elusive is that they are typically nocturnal insects, hiding during the day and coming out to feed at night.
Bed bugs can survive for several months without eating and can withstand a wide range of temperatures, from nearly freezing to 122°F. These pests also spread fast. In fact, each mature female bed bug can lay up to 500 eggs in their lifetime.
They are found in mattresses, box springs, sheets, cracks, crevices, picture frames, holes, loose materials such as wallpaper or paint, and other hiding areas close to people.
